Why commission a piece?

Six things you can count on, whichever option you choose.

  • Every piece is handmade and one of a kind.
  • Work is grounded in observational drawing and traditional technique.
  • Materials are chosen for permanence and archival quality.
  • Each commission begins with a careful review of references.
  • You receive a clear quote, schedule, and process before work begins.
  • Original commissions include a certificate of authenticity.

From reference to finished drawing

Reference-photo guide

  • Use sharp, well-lit photographs. Avoid blurry, dark or heavily filtered images.
  • Natural light from one side, such as a window, shows form best.
  • Send several photos and angles if you have them.
  • Don't crop important features.
  • For portraits, the eyes, nose, mouth and hairline should be clearly visible.

The likeness of the finished piece depends heavily on the quality of the reference. If your photos aren't ideal, send them anyway and I'll advise.

Anything else: imagination is the limit

Questions

Can you work from an old or low-quality photo?

Often, yes. Send it with your enquiry and I'll tell you honestly what is possible.

How many changes are included?

One composition sketch and one round of reasonable adjustments at the sketch stage are included. Major changes after composition approval, or additional revision rounds, are quoted separately.

Can I see progress?

Yes. I share the composition sketch for approval and, where helpful, progress photos.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, insured and tracked. Import duties and taxes in your country are your responsibility.

What if I'm not happy?

I'll make reasonable adjustments before the piece is finished. See the commission terms for details.

Do you work digitally or traditionally?

Both. Boards and roughs are often digital for speed; finished illustration can be traditional, digital or a mix, depending on the project.

Can you match an existing style or world?

Yes, within reason. Send examples with your brief and I'll say honestly whether it's a good fit.

Will you sign an NDA?

Yes, for confidential projects.
