Portrait
Portrait of M.
Charcoal on paper · 45 × 60 cm · 2026
A long-pose portrait drawn over four sessions. I wanted the light to do most of the work: one window, one shadow shape, and the smallest possible number of value steps.

About this piece
A long-pose portrait drawn over four sessions. I wanted the light to do most of the work: one window, one shadow shape, and the smallest possible number of value steps.

The process
Started with an envelope block-in and a single shadow shape, then worked the halftones from dark to light.

Materials and methods
Vine and compressed charcoal on 300 gsm cotton paper; kneaded eraser for lifting highlights.
